What is document attestation?

It’s the process of taking documents that have been issued in one country, and making them legally recognised in another.

Otherwise, an Egyptian employer or company has no idea whether your degree is real or not. The document attestation process gives everyone peace of mind that any foreign documents they’re dealing with are legitimate. It’s a necessary procedure, but it’s a bit of a nightmare – every country has different processes for different documents. Fortunately for you, we’re experts at legalising any documents from any country for use in Egypt. You can find a bit more about us here!

What’s the Egyptian attestation process in the UK?

For UK-issued documents, there are three or four steps needed to legalise documents for Egypt, depending on the type of document you’re getting attested.

  1. Certification – You might need to have the document certified by an FCDO-registered UK solicitor or Notary Public. They’ll make a copy of the document then stamp and sign it, confirming it’s a legitimate copy of the original. (If you’re legalising a birth, marriage, adoption or death certificate you won’t need to certify your document.)
  2. Apostille – You’ll need to have the document Apostilled by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
  3. Consular Stamp – Next, you’ll need to take the document to the Egyptian Embassy in London, where they’ll add their consular stamp.
  4. Attested by MoFA – Finally, you’ll need to send the document to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in Egypt.

It looks pretty simple when it’s condensed into four bullet-points, but actually it’s anything but. At the very least you’ll have to deal with the Egyptian Embassy in London (have a look at their reviews!) and the MoFA in Egypt. If you’re not familiar with Embassies, it can be a bit daunting.

If you’ve got non-UK documents that you need attesting for Egypt, don’t worry – although the process will be different, we can still take care of it for you. Just tell us which documents you’ve got and where they’re from. We’ll do the rest.

What even is an Apostille?
Do I need to take my documents to the Egyptian Embassy in London in person, or can I post them?
What happens to my documents at the MoFA?
