What is attestation?

Attestation is the process of taking documents issued in one country and making them fit for use in another. How you do it depends on a few variables: the document type, the country they’re from, the country they’re going to, and the reason you’re attesting. I know, I know – it all gets a bit complicated.

The good news is that some countries have joined something called the Hague Apostille Convention. It’s a collection of countries who have tried to make the document attestation as simple as possible. To legalise documents between these countries, you only need to complete one step – getting an Apostille.

The bad news is… Jordan isn’t one of them. That means that Jordanian attestation can be fairly complicated, with a number of extra steps.

So how do I get my documents attested for Jordan?

As Jordan isn’t a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, the process is more complex. It depends on what type of documents you’re needing to have legalised – different documents have different requirements depending on their type.

Take educational documents (like a Degree), for example. You could either attest your documents in the UK, or you could take them to Jordan and attest them there.

If you’ve got personal documents (like your birth certificate) you’ll need an Apostille applied at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), before getting a consular stamp at the Jordanian Embassy in London.

The process for company documents (like Certificates of Incorporation) is different, too. You’ll still need an Apostille, but then you’ll need to present them to the Arab Chamber of Commerce before you submit them to the Jordanian Embassy in London.

Getting your documents legalised for use in Jordan, if you aren’t familiar with the process, is a bit of a nightmare. You’ll need to work out the requirements for your specific documents, where they need to go, how you’re going to get them there, how they need to be presented, whether you need to take them in person or post them, how you’re going to get them back… and what order you need to do it all in.
