Walking Batley to Dubai – Our journey so far

Here at Vital Consular we're undertaking a virtual step challenge in order to fundraise for the British Heart Foundation. Many charities have struggled with funding during lockdown, so we chose a fundraising activity we could all get involved with, as well as keep up fit. We set a huge target of walking from our head office in Batley to our Middle East office in Dubai, but we're almost half way already!

Our teams from Batley, London and Dubai are all working together to reach the total distance of almost 4, 500 miles by tracking their daily total steps. Chris, our Dubai Branch Manager, is regularly smashing his personal target by regularly clocking up over 100k steps per week alone!

Why are we fundraising for the British Heart Foundation?

This well deserving charity is close to many of our colleagues here at Vital Consular. As with many charities, their funding has been greatly impacted in lockdown, with the loss of many of their revenue streams including the closure of their charity shops for most of the pandemic.

Sponsored events such as our virtual step challenge have become critical to the ongoing research conducted by organisations such as the British Heart Foundation, and it only made sense that we did something to boost our health and fitness during a time when it would only be too easy to become complacent (especially in the depths of the British winter).

The British Heart Foundation is a charity that is very important to my family and I as my lovely grandad sadly suffered many heart attacks during his life which contributed to his passing a few years ago. I’m very glad to be able to help support such a worthy cause and it’s even better that this challenge is aiding both my physical and mental health and wellbeing, which is so crucial in these difficult times.

I have always enjoyed walking, but found being part of our Vital walking community during my period of furlough helped with my motivation and wellbeing. I continue to walk, whether alone when I put the world to rights in my head, or with family or a friend and make time for a good chat.

This has done wonders for my mental health as I have been out in the fresh air instead of stuck inside. Competing against other people to see who got the most steps is a lot of fun and is allowing me to push myself!

It’s been a great driving force to get out and increase my steps, knowing it’s for a great cause like the British Heart Foundation. Recording steps has made me more mindful of my fitness levels and pushes me to get up and stay more active, and it’s been a great way to keep that sense of teamwork even though we’ve been apart so much during lockdown.
