Look forward to meeting them via our staff interview series later in the year.
Read on below to learn more about the area we’re going to be operating in, its rich history, and how easy it is to find us in London!
The History Behind Smithfield
Smithfield is well-known for having a complicated religious, cultural and trading history. In the Middle Ages, it was a broad grassy area known as Smooth Field, located beyond London Wall and stretching to the eastern bank of the River Fleet. Given its ease of access to grazing and water, Smithfield quickly established itself as London’s livestock market, and has remained so for almost 1,000 years. To this day it is one of the largest meat markets in any city in the world, with trading commencing at 2am and ending at 9am between Monday and Friday, so as not to disturb the various other businesses who ply their trade there!
In the Twelfth Century it was used as a vast recreational area where jousts and tournaments took place. But it wasn’t all merriment and joviality! There was also a murkier side to the area, because from the early Thirteenth Century it was used as a place of execution for criminals. Wat Tyler, the leader of the Peasants’ Revolt, was executed here, as was Scottish hero William Wallace. It was also the location of Bartholomew Fair – three days of merrymaking, dancing, trading and music which over the centuries became the most drunken, debauchery-filled holiday in the calendar. It lasted almost 700 years before it was eventually closed by the city in 1855.
